Rutherford 1st XI vs Gledowie 09/08/08

David* - Superb in goal again in very difficult conditions. Good kicking and several good saves. Showed great character and bravery after injury to leg.
Ravi- Struggled early on but got into the game in the 2nd half. Some good long range passing but must continue to work on fitness levels.
Joe- Top class again, turning into a very nice centre back. Reads danger, organises and rarely gets beaten on the deck or in the air.
Shiv -Having a better 2nd half of the season. Uses his pace well to cover fellow defenders and clearances are now of better quality.
Alex-Very unlucky for the 1st goal and barring that didn’t make to many mistakes. Must remain confident because as his natural left foot gives the team good balance.

After a long absence from playing due to both the holiday break poor weather and a bye mixed in, training this week almost had a pre-season feel to it. The colder temperatures and wet ground was a reminder that was not the case.

On Tuesday the team played a full on training match versus the 1ST XI which was just the hit out and return to action required. Thursday’s training was a little slower but the team with Jacob Mahia to the fore certainly wanted to take the opposition head on.

The team arrived at Glendowie in determined mood and produced the best performance of the season in very difficult conditions. Blair Money in goal who for the most part was unemployed tidied up and cleared well. The back four of Darren Jackson, Jacob Farry, Caleb van Beynen, and Ryan Pringle defended well as a unit and also showed increasing composure on the ball and made some quality passes.

The midfield four of Jaden Johnstone, Michael Callahan, Hayden Winslow, and Jacob Mahia were combative and creative and dictated terms. Mike and Hayden did well in the engine room and creative opportunities for Jadin and Jacob out wide to get down the line and get numerous crosses in. We may not have capitalized on as many as we should have but the quality of approach play certainly showed very good signs.

Just prior to half time the front two of Oscar Naidu and Simon Sekulov combined well with Simon racing clear to finish comfortably in the bottom right hand corner. The same combination extended the lead early in the second half as Oscar got free on the left inside the box and squared for Simon to flick home expertly with the outside of his right foot. A defensive lapse gave Glendowie a glimmer of hope as they scored following a goalmouth scramble.

The glimmer was soon extinguished as Simon completed his hat-trick with a 20 yard left foot strike which the keeper could not hold. Final score 3-1.

St Wilfrids Sports Visit 01/08/08

St Wilfreds Sports VisitSt Wilfreds Sports Visit

On Friday teams from England representing St Wilfrids School played against our Netball, Football and League teams. This was an enjoyable event watched by many and a good contest in the football and league games. Our football team lost 2-0 but did well against a strong team which had done well in its county matches in England. Like wise the League team, although losing by a somewhat wider margin, still put two tries down against a team at the top of their county, representing a population the size of New Zealand. The girls netball team were just too dominant against St Wilfreds so they swapped players around at half time and just enjoyed the play. Congratulations to all involved in the games and organisation.

Rutherford 1st IX vs Onehunga 02/08/08

Ethan*- Superb game some excellent saves and was brave diving at players feet. Only fault was distance on Goal kicks. Shares Man of the match.

Ravi- Very reliable in defence and rarely makes wrong decisions but could give more to the team going forward. Needs fitness work to improve this.

Joe*- Outstanding performance, didn’t lose a header! Made superb decisions and lead the defence very well. A deserved goal from a set piece capped a fine game. Shared Man of the Match.

Shivneel- Backed Joe up very well and also took on board past comments and has produced good solid displays recently.
