13OED Snow Camp 2022
During week 1 of Term 3, the students in 13 Outdoor Education participated in a Snow Camp. This camp saw 36 students travel down to Tongariro National Park and stay in the Forest and Bird Lodge in Whakapapa Village. The purpose of this camp was to analyse safety management issues. Students had completed risk analysis and management strategies forms prior to attending. On return from the trip, students critically evaluated the safety issues and devised strategies to improve.
Unfortunately, the weather did not play ball and the mountain was closed throughout. This meant we were not able to go skiing or snowboarding. Students still enjoyed a walk to Taranaki Falls and an afternoon at the hot pools. We did manage to drive to the top of the road and experience snowfall.
We were incredibly proud of the students and their positive attitudes despite the mountain being closed. Students upheld the Rutherford College values and represented the school with pride. On reflection, all students stated they thoroughly enjoyed the camp and were appreciative of the efforts of all involved.
