Rutherford College Ball 2018

On a starry Friday evening in 1 June 2018 at 7:00pm the doors of the North Lounge at Eden Park opened to the Year 12 and 13 students. It was not hard to see that everyone had put a great deal of effort into achieving that 'perfect look' with the extremely elegant dresses, smartly tailored suits and spectacular masks. The students and their guests were welcomed at the top of the stairs by Mr Moore, head girl Jane Lee 13PR and head boy Reuben He 13JF. The setting inside was magnificent with a red carpet and gold curtains at the…

Year 9 STARS Camp

Over the past 2 weeks, the year 9s have completed the annual STARS camp. This is the 9th year that we have had a partnership with the Graeme Dingle Foundation who hugely subsidise the camp for all year 9 students to attend. The main aim of the camp is to strengthen relationships and work on communication and teamwork in the students’ tutor classes and year group. Students are tested as they are encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and attempt new tasks they have not always tried before and many times students overcome fears and boost their self-confidence…

Careers Expo and Job Fest

Thirty eager students signed up to attend the annual New Zealand Careers Expo held at the ASB show grounds in Greenlane.  We attended the evening session as we have found this the best time to walk around at leisure and chat informally with representatives from key providers face to face. Our students were praised for their ability to engage and ask relevant questions as they gathered information from the stands about tertiary courses, vocational pathways, trades, apprenticeships, study link, jobs etc. This year JOBFEST was included – the biggest event for employers and young people under one roof! The emphasis…

Every Student Deserves A Warm And Demanding Adult

Communication is Oxygen Focus on good, next-steps advice to students and stress What’s Important Now (W.I.N) on the completion of assessments and hitting deadlines and personal well being. As teachers it is okay that we want our students to like us. They should like us because we display genuine interest in their lives, their interests, their frustration and their progress in learning how to be. We want to walk into our learning environments with confidence. We can do this by being prepared and organised. This creates the mental space to listen to what students say, in both words and body language.…

Hillary Outdoor Tongariro Adventure week

Rutherford College recently had the privilege and pleasure of sending 20 girls (10 from Rutherford College and 10 from Te Atatu Intermediate), for a week with Hillary Outdoors to the Tongaririo Centre. In addition to the lifelong friendships made, the Hillary Outdoors experience has built confidence in so many girls and in such a short time.  We have already witnessed the development of their leadership qualities to a new level that would not have been possible for many, prior to their week at the Tongariro Centre. The entire experience was unparalleled in its benefits and the Hillary Outdoors course from…
