Principal’s Panui – 31 August 2018

On Friday, 24 August we celebrated the 56th Annual Rutherford Memorial Day.  It was an absolute privilege and pleasure to have as our guest speaker Sir Pita Sharples. A man of huge mana, wisdom and a man with strong links to the west and Rutherford College. So, why do we have a Rutherford Memorial Day?  There are three reasons. Firstly, on this day we pause to remember that our school is named after one of the world’s foremost scientists of not just his generation but of all time – Sir Ernest Rutherford, Nobel prize winner. Secondly, Rutherford Day is a…

National Tournament Week

Best wishes to all of our teams heading off to national tournaments next week. Involvement in weeks and opportunities like these are always a highlight for the students involved. Teams that will have the most enjoyable and therefore successful weeks understand the value of the 'we' in creating successful teams. As individuals we all have roles to play, the better we do them as individuals both on and off the pitch or court, the more we contribute to the greater good of the team. Play well, recover well and look after each other.

Turangawaewae Football Competition

Part of the Play.sport Activator’s role is to provide more opportunities for Special Olympic athletes by giving them occasions to enjoy being physically active. Rutherford College has been working closely with Henderson High school to deliver a 4 week football competition for these students. This week Rutherford hosted their first home game and following an intense warm up with Coach Greg Chalmers, the Turangawaewae team took to the court ready for the game to begin. Plenty of action followed with Diamond Tasi showing great reflex skills and reacting quickly to save numerous goals. Their opponents had to face the powerful…

Te Atatu Intermediate Challenge Day

On Tuesday, 28 August as part of our plan to develop and strengthen partnerships within our Communities of Learning, a group comprised of 10 prefects and Year 9 students visited Te Atatu Intermediate School. They met with Year 8 students split over two groups to complete activities involving thinking and co-operative challenges and some competition. The purpose was to allow the different aged students to interact so that Rutherford College students could help demystify High School and answer questions the intermediate students have about what it is really like. This was the second intermediate school visit this term as part…

Qualified Pool Lifeguards

During the July school holidays, three Sports Committee members attended a 5 day course run by Drowning prevention Auckland, to become fully qualified pool lifeguards. The students that were identified for the Pool Lifesaving Programme were selected for longevity and sustainable reasons. Two are Year 12 students, Matt Darrah and Johnnie Richard Marster and the third being our tireless Sport Captain, Laura Robertson and for who it is a pleasure to be able to reward her in some small way. All three have expressed their willingness to volunteer their services so we can fully utilise our school pool. Throughout the…

Write Here. Write Now! – West Auckland Secondary School Writing Project

Students from Rutherford College recently took part in a five week writing course with writing teachers Paula Morris and Ruby Porter. The best work from the writing workshop has been compiled in an attractive anthology that will be published and distributed in the wider community. 'These short pieces are intense, imaginative and often funny, exploring the streets, playgrounds and people of the area,' says Paula Morris, award-winning novelist and Associate Professor at the University of Auckland, who selected and edited students' work for publication. We warmly invite you, your whānau and friends to attend the launch and support your student…

Goethe Society Oral German Language Competition at the University of Auckland

On Saturday, 11 August nine German language students from Rutherford College took part in this year’s German language competition from the Goethe Society of Auckland University. The students had to introduce themselves in German and then engage in an unrehearsed interaction in German with the examiners. Our students mastered this challenge really well and made Rutherford College proud. Zabrin Consing, Vicki Varava and Katie Collis were awarded Bronze and Silver Awards for their age group and Kyra…

Students from China appreciated the variety of cultural and learning experiences they had during their two week visit to Rutherford College. Each had a Rutherford buddy who assisted during classroom integration. Special thanks to the buddies who were awesome ambassadors.

Year 13 Geography and Travel Trip to Rotorua

On Wednesday, 15 August, level three Geography and Travel & Tourism classes started their three day trip to Rotorua to learn about the development of tourism over time in New Zealand and specifically in the district. Rotorua is the heart of New Zealand tourism which started back in the late 1800's with the Pink and White Terraces. It has developed into a home to various attractions based around the geothermal activity in the district, adventure thrills and Maori cultural experiences. We were all very fortunate enough to learn about this development in the best way - experiencing a number of…
