Year 13 Biology Zoo Trip

The two year 13 Biology classes went to the Auckland Zoo for the day on Friday, 14 September. The aim was to get first hand knowledge of our special New Zealand species to understand why they have ended up with features that once worked so well, but were major disadvantages once humans and their introduced species arrived in poor Aotearoa. Each class had a workshop with a zoo educator looking at species such as keas, kakas, kereu and the reptiles. We then had a look at the nocturnal animals like kiwi, wetapunga, morepork and bats, realising that they are all…

Principal’s Panui – 14 September 2018

Whakatauki E hara taku toa i te toa takitaki he toa takatini My strength is not As an individual, But as a collective Together we achieve more. Surround yourself with positive, passionate like-minded people. Work hard, value little acts of human kindness and develop your brand image on a daily basis through your deeds, words and actions. I believe that we all need to be wary of 'mood-hoovers' or 'energy vampires'. It’s tough enough on some days, with what is in front of us to manage our own attitude without having others suck out our optimism. Surround yourself with positive…

Winter Tournament Week – Football First XI

Winter Tournament week ran from 3-7 September. A young team with 11 national tournament debutantes headed to Napier for the Rex Dawkins Cup. A 4-3 first up loss was not a good start, but was followed by a 4-2 win over Hillcrest High School. Tuesday morning produced a 2-2 draw in a high quality game with Hutt Valley High School. Tueaday afternoon was a must win or at the very least a must not lose game against Northcote. In a game where we played good football in possession we got punished by a strong physical team who capitalised on mistakes…

Rutherford College Walking Netball Team

This term a bunch of staff (and ex-staff) led by Ms Koloni got together to form the Rutherford College Walking Netball Team, RC Clan and what a great success it was. Our team had a big variety of members, from people who have played netball in their youth, so they knew what they were doing, to people that have never played any netball and had no idea how to catch a ball. For 8 weeks we laughed lots, we learnt lots and we put our best effort to win. We didn’t win any prizes this season, but we did win a few games and…

Festival of Adult Learning Ahurei Ākonga 2018

This year the Festival of Adult Learning Ahurei Ākonga (formerly Adult Learner’s Week He Tangata Mātauranga) was launched on Saturday, 1 September at Rutherford College, West Auckland. The launch marked the beginning of a week of events across the country. West Auckland, as Pale Sauni the MC for the event pointed out, is one of the relatively few communities in Aotearoa New Zealand where ACE continues to really thrive. And the day proved his point. Rutherford College was one of the first four pilot schools selected in 1974 to provide adult learning. Today it is one of just a small…

Year 11 Study Skills Day – Massey University

A group of our Year 11 students spent the day at Massey University’s Albany Campus on Wednesday, 5 September along with students from other North Island secondary schools. The aim of the day was to equip students with some useful study skills and tools as they head into their first set of NCEA exams. The day started with a campus tour in the form of “The Amazing Race” which our students did really well in and then moved into workshops in the Business School Auditorium. These workshops covered planning your time, exam preparation and academic writing. The day was very…

NZ Author Rachael Craw visited the Library

We were very lucky to have Rachael Craw talking to 9SL. Rachael is an amazing NZ author and a teacher, she was born in Christchurch and lived her whole life there until the 2010 and 2011 Earthquakes, now she is living in Nelson with her family. Rachael came here thanks to the Storylines National Festival Story Tour, where lots of schools in New Zealand get the privilege to meet and listen to amazing NZ authors. Rachael’s best known books are “The Spark Trilogy” these books have received 5 start reviews and several awards. Spark, her first book, has even been…

2019 Homestay Registration

2019 Homestay Registration

Register now to host an international student in 2019. The International Student Programme is a valued part of life at Rutherford College, providing opportunities for our students to interact with and gain greater understanding of other cultures and different ways of living. 2019 will be no exception and we are looking forward to once again welcoming International Groups to our school to experience a slice of “Kiwi life” and of course to learn and practice English. We require lots of new homestay families who are willing to host international students on a short term basis. This could mean hosting for…

Student Representative Election 2018

Student Representative Election 2018

Each year Rutherford holds an election to vote a student onto the Board of Trustees and the School Representative. Nominations have been received and voting starts on Tuesday, 11 September and closes at 4pm on Friday, 14 September 2018. Any student enrolled full time in Year 9 and above, under the age of 20, is eligible to stand for election and vote in the school election for a student representative.  Student representatives have equal standing, voice, accountabilities and vote as other board members, but they can't be the board chair (neither can the principal nor staff trustee).  They're not just…
