Rutherford Students at Waitemata Rowing Club

Eleven of our Rutherford College students participated in the first regatta for the season last weekend at Ngongotaha. This was a collaborative event with our students' competition for Waitemata Rowing Club which as a club brings together students from eight other Auckland Secondary Schools.  They had great fun and excellent results giving them all a confident start to the beginning of the season. Roman Army comes to the Classroom

The Roman Army came to life for two lucky Social Studies classes last week!  Mr Darren White, Classics and Social Studies teacher at Rutherford College, brought in his collection of weapons and armour for 9Gu and 9Sa to check out.  An avid hobbyist and collector, Mr White gave demonstrations and in-depth explanations of how the weapons and protective gear worked. Students then had the opportunity to wear the chainmail, helmets and other gear and hold a gladius, pugio and pilum along with a scutum (shield). ‘Censor For A Day’ Trip

On Wednesday, 14 August, Year 12 and 13 Media Studies students went to the “Censor for a Day” workshop at Event Cinemas in Albany to learn the process of rating and restricting films in New Zealand. This workshop is run by the Office of Film and Literature Classification, to both educate young people and also for the OFLC to gain a better insight into young people’s opinions. Lani Wendt Young Visit

On Friday 23 August, Rutherford College thanks to storyline NZ, had the privilege to have author Lani Wendt Young speak with some of our year 9 students (9PL, 9GU and 9PR). Lani is a Samoan/Maori writer, editor, publisher and journalist, her kids came to Rutherford College. She attended university in the USA and New Zealand. Storytelling is her passion. She is the author of 11 books and has won multiple awards for her short fiction. The library has most of her books, so feel free to come and borrow them. Harrison Chapman and The Tough Guy and Gal Challenge

On Saturday, 24 August Harrison Chapman set off to Rotorua to compete in the Tough Guy and Gal Challenge. Harrison was selected to compete in this New Zealand Championship from finishing first in the Auckland Secondary Schools competition. This is a tough 12km course and Harrison finished an impressive 2nd in the school competition out of New Zealand. Congratulations to Harrison for this great achievement.

Special Olympics Basketball Drills and Skill Day

On Thursday, 22 August, Rutherford College hosted the Special Olympics Basketball drills and skills day. Over 13 teams from different schools attended, with over 100 students participated. It was a privilege to be involved in this day seeing the students having so much fun. Thank you to the Sports committee for supporting the students with this event by improving their basketball skills, and another big thanks to parents and teachers who volunteer their time to join us at this event.
