Principal’s Panui – 20 March 2020

The following was my intended message for assemblies this week. With what is happening in the world we may all have had to develop a few new norms and routines. With that said, should distance learning become a new temporary norm, organisation and routines are still going to be crucial to attaining progress, probably more so as there will be more self-management required. Into the rhythm and routines of the academic year My expectation of all staff and students is that by now the patterns and expectations are established and consistently understood across all learning areas and within individual classroom…

Fia Fia Night 2020

Wednesday, 11 March 2020 saw the return of the annual Fia Fia Night at Rutherford College. Celebrating the diversity of Rutherford through the cultural dances and performances of the Samoan, Indian, African, and Kapa Haka groups - 2020’s Fia Fia Night was both powerful and mesmerizing. The turnout of supporters this year at the Fia Fia Night was outstanding. All those who came to support the groups did so in a way that truly gave the night a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The overwhelming support from friends, family and the school, made the night one to remember as it allowed…

Central Western Zone Athletics

On Tuesday, 10 March a team of almost 30 athletes from our school descended on the Central Western Zone Athletics Championships at Mt Smart Track and Field Stadium. The weather was a mixed bag with brilliantly hot conditions and also rainy, windy, cooler temperatures at other times. This mirrored to a certain extent the results of our team, but definitely not the efforts, as we battled in all the events that were on offer to us. We had athletes competing right from the beginning of the day where Harrison Chapman competed in the Senior boys’ 3000m race, right through to…

Cross Country Day

Brilliant sunshine and picturesque views greeted our students on Friday, 6 March as they battled over the undulating terrain that is the Te Atatu Pony Club and our Perennial venue for the Rutherford College Cross Country Day. Throughout the afternoon we had year 9, 10 and seniors compete, or leisurely stroll, around our 2km course. We even had visiting Japanese students participate as well. The usual suspects battled it out upfront in the Year 10 and senior races. Harry Chapman, Hannah Taylor, Jessica Williams and Jesse Schwalger being crowned our Cross Country Champions in their respective races. The Year 10…

Principal’s Panui – 13 March 2020

Ownership and Acceptance lead us towards one of our core Rutherford values of Responsibility.  In life, we cannot talk a way out of a situation that we have behaved our way in to. If we have made a mistake or failed, then the first thing to do is to look at what we did and take ownership for that error or failure and accept that you may need to do something different. Once we have done that, we take action and the responsibility for making the change that needs making. Taking this step forward is brave but also makes us…

Year 12 Travel and Tourism Trip

On Friday, 6 March the Year 12 Travel and Tourism class had a day out to give them an insight into what it’s like to be a tourist.  After battling traffic on the North-Western motorway, our first stop was Westhaven where we had a spin around the harbour in a jet boat with Auckland Adventure Jet.  Although everyone got a bit of a drenching, the ride provided a real adrenaline rush for all.  A walk through the Wynyard Quarter and the Viaduct completed the first section of our trip. Next stop:  Bastion Point and a quick look around the beautiful…

Atomic Kiwis Quest for a National Title

Rutherford Robotics - The Atomic Kiwis. On Saturday, 29 of February and Sunday, 1 of March, the two Rutherford robotics teams attended the 2019 / 2020 VEX Robotics ‘Tower Takeover’ National competition. At the end of a long weekend and ten fierce games both Rutherford teams were placed in the lower third of the competition. Although their final placement was not the most impressive part of their year, both teams learnt a lot about designing, programming and building a robot while meeting new people and having loads of fun. Team 2913A were able to find their alliance partner from last…

12 OED Goldie Bush Tramp

The first 12 Outdoor Education tramp for the year took place at Goldie Bush in the Waitakere Ranges on Thursday, 27 February. This picturesque 4-hour tramp was an introduction into the tramping unit where students will be learning about tramping skills and etiquette such as navigation, environmental care, self-management and safety. Students enjoyed waterfall views, river crossings and undisturbed native bush just to name a few. We look forward to the next tramp from Muriwai to Bethells Beach through the Te Henga Walkway!

Principal’s Panui – 6 March 2020

Resilience in the face of challenge. Triumph and Disaster (part of the experience). Nothing in life including success can be guaranteed, even if we have given it our best effort. What our best effort or Tohea does guarantee is the best chance of success, being the best version of ourselves. Our best efforts give us the chance to learn and be better today than we were yesterday and at Rutherford, we know this to be what winning really is. Striving for personal excellence is really all about the work habits and the resiliency developed, these are the true rewards for…
