Junior Mixed Touch Season

As the Western Zone Touch competition was set up as a one-day tournament, we decided to enter our Junior Mixed Touch team into a seasonal competition as well. Therefore, we entered into the North Harbour competition for the season. Our games were every Tuesday at Hato Petera College in Northcote. The team was scheduled for four pool games over that period and came out of the round robin undefeated with 18 tries for and only 3 against. This placed us in good stead heading into the final vs Takapuna Grammar that was played on Tuesday, 24 November. Thanks to the…

Waitakere Composite Cricket Team

Over the last few weeks, we have had a group of boys involved in a Waitakere Composite Cricket team. As we have not had sufficient numbers to enter our own Rutherford College team this season, these boys have taken the opportunity to gel with a few others from Waitakere and Liston to compete in the Junior A T20 Central / West competition. Playing under the coaching of Ben Brain’s father Philip throughout this Term 4 season, the team has performed very well, finishing with a 2 – 2 record. The wins have been emphatic, and the losses have been very…

Lucas has been training at the Oliver MMA gym in New Lynn for 3-4 hours each day, under the guidance of his coaches Nick Thornton, Karlo Witana, Kyle Murtagh and others. Their coaching…

Junior Science Ant Investigation

Over the past two weeks, several junior Science classes have been completing an ecology investigation into ant populations at Rutherford College.  NZ has over 40 species of ants, most of them introduced by humans.  The native ants play a significant role in our NZ ecosystems, including pollinating some plants and helping to disperse seeds of native trees. Students of 9GR, 9TL and 10JF conducted genuine scientific research to identify which ant species are found around the Rutherford College grounds, which foods they are attracted to and which microhabitats they are found in.  Each group of students chose a location around…
