NCEA Literacy and Numeracy Trial

As part of a significant review of the NCEA qualification, NZQA will launch new assessments for the Literacy and Numeracy requirements in 2023. These will take the place of the current literacy and numeracy requirements. At present, students need to achieve at least 10 literacy and 10 numeracy credits to qualify for an NCEA certificate. These have been available through a range of standards taught through different subjects in the school. From 2023, literacy and numeracy will be assessed in stand-alone tests run by NZQA. At Rutherford College, we want to know best how to support our learners through this…

Principal’s Panui 18 March 2022

Kia ora te whanau o te kotuku The shorter days have worked really well while we have navigated our way through what we hope is the peak of Omicron, the extreme heat of the afternoons, and the impact that this has on students and staff when they are wearing masks for up to six hours a day.  The attitude across the board and the work ethic have been excellent. We are therefore going to extend the finishing time of 1.30pm for next week.  An increased number of staff and students are returning to school and the way we are tracking…

Principal’s Panui 11 March 2022

Kia ora te whanau o te Kotuku I believe that the decision to run four periods a day and finish at 1:25pm has paid off. I have over the last two weeks visited over 200 classes, most of the time, just passing through to check on the learning habits and behaviours that provide the platform for a positive culture and therefore the long-term happiness and success of everyone who is part of the Kotuku flock. As a result of these walkthroughs, I further believe that not asking our rangatahi to front up after lunch with masks on has created more…

Principal’s Panui – 4 March 2022

Kia ora te whanau o te Kotuku, At Rutherford, we strive for personal excellence. That requires both teachers and students to be doing their 50%. If you want to make progress you walk on two legs. If the teacher’s efforts are the right leg and your effort is the left leg and you work side by side, you start to make forward progress. If one of the legs is not doing its 50% of the work, then progress is severely impacted. Think about a shared lunch situation where two people are going to contribute. If one person doesn’t bring anything;…

Swimming Sports 2022

It was a fantastic day on Tuesday, 22 February for our annual swimming sports. There was a change in format this year due to the constraints of covid, which gave our competitive swimmers the opportunity to showcase their talents. The racing was intense with a smaller number of students involved though most were in multiple events throughout the afternoon. They were effectively jumping in, out, and back into the pool, but each race was as competitive as the next. All were happy with the efforts of the swimmers and their high involvement certainly tested their endurance and recoverability. To the…
