Rogaine 2022

On Tuesday 12 April the beautiful grounds and surrounding streets of Totara Park, Manurewa heard the sounds of running/walking footsteps, directions and laughter as six teams of Rutherford Rogainers searched for checkpoints around the area as part of the School Rogaine Challenge competition provided by Hillary Outdoors. The event requires teams of three or four to use map skills, fitness, and communication to find as many checkpoints as they can within a 2-hour period. Auckland Secondary Schools Senior Volleyball Championships

Wednesday 6th April to Friday 8 April, our Senior Boys and Girls Volleyball teams competed at this year’s Auckland Secondary School Senior Volleyball Championships held at Bruce Pulman Arena in Takanini. Our teams were both participating in Division 2 of this tournament. Navigating our way through pool play, and then playoffs, our teams had six games in total for our girls and five for our boys. Kia ora Te Whanau o Te Kotuku I would like to acknowledge the support of our wider school community throughout the first term, it is greatly appreciated. Champion of Champion Swimming Sports

On Wednesday 13 April we had three Rutherford students who qualified for the Auckland Champion of Champion Swimming sports. All 3 students gave it their absolute all against very tough competition, many who are national champions. Amy Thomson and Dylan Chapman narrowly missed out on a place in their races.We are very proud of these students and their efforts and look forward to watching them in future years.

Polyfest 2022 – Niue Speech Competition

On Saturday 26th March at the Manukau Sports Bowl, Ola Grace Viviani participated in the Niue Speech Competition at Polyfest 2022, to a limited live and much larger online audience.  This year was quite different from previous years, but it didn’t take away from her heartfelt presentation. Her topic, Ko e vagahau ko e haaku a fakaveaga – My language is my strength, allowed her to share the significance of Vagahau Niue (Niue language) and the role it plays not only for Ola Grace but for many Niuean. Sea Week Art Competition

Sea Week is an annual weekly celebration of our seas hosted by the New Zealand Association for Environmental Education. Various events happened across the country to encourage education about our waters and the environmental problems they are facing today. Here in Rutherford College, the Enviro group had planned activities for students to participate in. Throughout the week we held an art contest for students to show their artistic abilities with the theme being ocean pollution, where students could promote positive messages about our seas while showing awareness about the dangers they are facing. Year 12 Outdoor Education Trip to Lake Pupuke

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week the Year 12 Outdoor Education students spent a day each demonstrating their kayaking skills at Lake Pupuke.Students have been practicing their kayaking competence, wet exits, T-Rescues and rolls in the school pool for a number of weeks and this trip was their chance to demonstrate what they had learnt in open water.The weather was great for us and the students represented the school to a high level. Congratulations to everyone involved.

NZ Secondary Schools Open Water Championships

Further to our previous reporting of Dylan Chapman, and sister Emma, competing at the Open Water Auckland Secondary School Champs back in February, Dylan has now competed at the NZ Secondary School Open Water Championships. This was held at Main Beach, Mt Maunganui on Saturday 2 April. Competing in the 1250m event, Dylan battled the cream of New Zealand’s Secondary School open water swimmers and finished a creditable 7th place in his Division. Auckland College Rock Climbing Series

On Sunday, the Rutherford College climbing team was lucky enough to compete in the first round of the Auckland College Climbing Series hosted at Extreme Edge Panmure. It was an awesome day, with over 100 competitors from schools around Auckland under the new Covid-19 guidelines. Rutherford consisted of a team of 8 and all had an enjoyable day. African Group performs at Assembly

Year 9 and 10 students were very lucky this week at assembly to be able to watch our talented African group and it was wonderful for the group to able to share their talent with the student cohort. After a few years of not being able to perform to an audience, the students were finally able to showcase their masterpiece which made them the Diversity Stage winners for 2022.  The African group performance was absolutely amazing and mesmerizing to watch.  A huge thank you to all parents, teachers, tutors and students for all the support.
