Te Reo Māori Taranaki Trip 2022

On Wednesday the 18th of May, students from Year 11, 12, and 13 Te Reo Māori classes set off for Taranaki. The purpose of the five-day trip was for students to experience te reo Māori (the Māori language) and te ao Māori (the Māori world) in an iwi-based context, and to learn more about the bicultural history of Aoteroa, specifically what happened in the Taranaki area. A breakdown on the way out of Auckland slowed us down a little, but did not stop us arriving in Ngāmotu (New Plymouth) in time to shop for our kai at Pak n Save,…

Principal’s Panui – 27 May 2022

Kia ora te whanau o te Kotuku This week's theme for assemblies and tutor time is how to invest in your Human Capital.  I have been reminding everyone how important it is to do the little things well and that can be as easy as being on time and staying focused on what is happening right now in class or wherever you may need to direct your attention. I invite you to take a look at the PowerPoint Presentation shared with everyone which clearly outlines how making each moment count, especially when it comes to being at school every day,…

The Āpōpō programme

Mental health is an important piece of the holistic vision we have for our staff and students at Rutherford College. New Zealand mental health statistics show that there is much work that can be done in this space. As a school, we are continually working towards supporting our students in this area, particularly in developing their skills to support not only themselves, but others around them too. At Rutherford, we are about to embark on a programme called Āpōpō - The Next Day. The programme equips our students with some basic and effective tools, so that they can feel confident…

Session with Breakers Basketball Coach

On Wednesday 11th May a handful of basketball boys were fortunate enough to participate in a training session with the Breakers development coach Rashid Al-Kareem. Coach Rashid ran us through many different drills that featured different parts of the game. We went through fast breaks, shooting, defensive scenarios and play making scenarios. These drills were effective in teaching us the game of basketball and we had fun playing basketball with the other boys. Our basketball session is starting up, so we will definitely take a lot of what Coach Rashid taught us and put it into our own game. I…

Night Classes at Rutherford College – nearly 50 years on

Historically the purpose of community education has been to not only provide adult students with the opportunity for on-going learning, but to also open up the school to the community. Greater involvement by the community in the school and in the use of school facilities is thought to lead to greater acceptance of the school as part of the community and a reduction in such things as property damage and mischievous behaviour. “A School is much more effective if it establishes partnerships or networks with parents, with community groups, with other learning agencies rather than operating like an “island apart”…

Year 12 Outdoor Education Tramp

Last week the 12OED students participated in the first of their three day tramps. This tramp started at the Arataki Visitor Centre on Scenic Drive. We completed the loop track which comprised of 3 individual tracks. They were the Beveridge Track, Pipeline Track and Slip Track. Our students handled the walk well, especially with the steep climb on the slip track. Together with a group of 61 students, it took us just over 2 hours to complete the walk. This was a great training walk for our students as our next walk is the much steeper and longer Karamatura Track…

Year 13 Outdoor Education Rock Climbing

On Tuesday this week our Year 13 Outdoor Education students attended their second trip to Vertical Adventures in Glen Eden to go Rock Climbing. This is to work on an assessment called 3.9 which is all about devising strategies to improve performance. In the first trip students spent time figuring out their current ability. Over the last few weeks we have been improving our strength. This trip was designed to see if we are making improvements and what adjustments to our strategies we need to make. The students have made great progress so far and will continue to train for…

Principal’s Panui – 20 May 2022

Kia ora te whanau o te Kotuku Growth Mindset; A Positive outlook and a willingness to be realistic and optimistic about what creates the foundation for positive progress and change. Why would anyone play baseball where even the best players have a strike rate of only 1/3? Star baseball players only hit the ball about three out of every ten times. How do they live with such a high failure rate? By focusing on the law of averages. They know that if they just keep swinging the bat, they will get on base. In 1952 Roger Bannister ran in the…

Principal’s Panui – 13 May 2022

Kia ora te whanau o te Kotuku Throughout the journey, from a fledging kotuku through to being a year 13 the objective is to have learned to work hard and along the way, smarter. Learn also that happiness and success is based on a work ethic. Great Rutherford People (GRP) will be kind and will surround themselves with other positive likeminded people who understand that not everything will be easy but they will be there for you, in the good times and the bad and understand that every day we can only start from where our feet are now. GRP’s…
