Principal’s Panui – 30 September 2022

Kia ora te whanau o te kotuku Earth school – The school for our lifetime. Life on earth is full of opportunities to learn. Often, these opportunities don't feel pleasant. Sometimes they feel downright awful! Here are some relevant words on this topic from an Oprah Winfrey interview with author Gary Zukav. "Even if you're in an encounter that feels uncomfortable, or that brings anger or disruption, that encounter has happened in your life in order to grow you, or provide an opportunity for you to grow, to whatever is the next level of your own personal evolution." Gary Zukav…

School Cross Country 2022

After a false start and delay early in the year, our School Country event took place on Thursday 22 September. The event is normally undertaken in February, so there has been quite a wait to try to hold this event. The underfoot conditions were a little muddy and damp, but I am sure it made a more fun opportunity to enjoy the countryside of the Te Atatu Pony club that is our venue. With exams for our senior school currently being undertaken, we were limited to our junior school participating and competing around our 2.4 km course. As was the…

Dawn Raids Play written by Oscar Kightley (Ex Rutherford Student)

On Thursday 25th August, a group of young Pasifika Rutherfordians were taken out to the ASB Waterfront Theatre to watch Oscar Kightley’s ‘Dawn Raids’. The ‘Dawn Raids’ is a retelling of what happened to Pacific Islanders living in New Zealand during the 1970s. Many Pacific Islanders came to New Zealand with the aspiration to work and dreams of a better life for themselves and their children. Due to New Zealand's high demand for labour during the 1960s, the Labour government encouraged the migration alongside the employers for as long as the excess labour demand continued. However during the 1970s, New…

Kaitiakitanga on Henderson Creek

After high winds and rain postponed the trip from Monday, we were able to take students Kayaking on the Henderson Creek on Wednesday 14th September. The purpose of this trip was to participate in an outdoor activity under the framework of Kaitiakitanga. Students had previously learned about the local iwi's Tikanga and Kawa and what Kaitiakitanga meant through a visit to the school Marae. They had a special guest visit by an ecological expert who linked the prior learning to the special area that the Te Atatū Peninsula is a part of. This came together with the kayaking trip where…

Principal’s Panui – 23 September 2022

Kia ora te whanau o te kotuku I share this particular story because sometimes we are surrounded by fog (tiredness) and can be blindly holding fast to a destination or way of doing things when there might be a better alternative. Facing up to the truth Sometimes the truth is staring us in the face but we cannot see it.  When our assumptions are challenged, we need to face reality and, if necessary, adapt to the way things really are instead of trying to hide from the truth.  We have to change when change is inevitable. There is a story…

Camp Idol Event

Yr 9 Camp Idol Camp Idol is an important thing for all year 9’s alike. Our peer mentors kept on reminding us. We would spend multiple tutor time periods learning and improving our dance. We were all prepared and pepped up when the day came along. Our peer mentors were constantly reminding us that Camp Idol will be remembered for all of our 5 years at college. On the day of the camp idol competition, we were all nervous. We were competing against 4-5 classes to go to the final, so this was a big deal. Standing in front of…

Principal’s Panui – 16 September 2022

Kia ora te whanau o te kotuku 1. GIVE UP 2. GIVE IN 3. GIVE IT ALL YOU'VE GOT Ever since I was a teenager I have loved and lived by inspirational quotes and motivational messages like the one above. I've come to realise recently that there's more than one way of looking at these messages. I realised that the message that one person perceives from a quote, may be completely different to the message someone else receives. The message -  You've got 3 choices in life: GIVE UP, GIVE IN, OR GIVE IT ALL YOU'VE GOT has been a…
