If your child is going to be absent from school, please advise the Attendance Office before 9:30 a.m.
Options for notification are:
- School Links (click on the button on this page to sign up). This is a great way to receive and send notifications.
- Email the Attendance Officer
- Telephone the College – 09 834 9790 (press 1 to Report an Absence)
The Ministry of Education requires that the parent / caregiver provide a signed note explaining the reason for the absence or a medical certificate. This should be provided to the Attendance Officer when the student returns to school. This note is not required if the Absence is reported through School Links.
The Education Act requires all children and young people to be enrolled in and attend school from their 6th to their 16th birthday whenever school is open for instruction. There is a clear correlation between attendance and achievement so our Board of Trustees places attendance as a very high priority for our students.
If this process is not followed, and/or concerning patterns are forming, the absences will be recorded as truancy and further action may be taken.
We must record absences as being Justified or Unjustified so please be very careful about allowing your child to stay home if the reason is not justified. Here are some examples:
- Illness / medical / dentist / counselling
- Cultural or sporting representation
- Dance / music exams
- Bullying issues
- School bus
- Road closure for accidents
- Exceptional family circumstances
- Family, parent’s fault
- Slept in / recovering from the weekend
- Holiday in NZ or Overseas
- Sales, shopping, birthdays, airport drop offs
- Caregiver responsibilities / taking siblings to school
- Waiting for service people
- Driver’s test
- Going to the vet
- Visiting ill relative
- Moving house / packing
Requesting Leave During Term Time
Requests for student leave during term time must be sent to the Principal for review at least one week prior to departure.
Students who arrive late must report to the Attendance Officer to sign in.
If you know the student will be late, please advise the College as you would an absence and provide a signed note of explanation. Thank you.
Students who leave the College during the day must obtain a pass from their Dean then report to the Attendance Officer (or Reception if the Attendance Office is closed) for a Police clearance slip.
If you plan to take your child out of school early for any reason, please provide a signed note of explanation.
If a student wishes to leave school due to a medical issue, they must first report to the School Nurse who will assess their condition and call the student’s contact person to make arrangements for the student to be collected. They will also require a Police clearance slip.
Students are not to make arrangements to leave the College themselves.
