Lily Carter – Solo Exhibition

Normally, the Art Exhibitions in the reception foyer of the school involve several students' work, not just one. Lily Carter's drawings, however, are so good we felt they stood alone. Even more amazing is that she drew them last year, when she was in Y10 Art. Lily is currently doing NCEA, level one. Look for her work in the portfolio exhibition at the end of the year!

Swimming Sports Day

On Friday, 12 February we saw our students enjoy a beautiful bright day to have some fun and compete in the School Swimming championships. The pool looked a picture with the lane barriers and glistening, inviting water. A number of students signed-up to compete in the various disciplines which was good, but we do need to ensure commitments are fulfilled to have even more in the pool. Whilst we would have liked everyone to be involved, those that did were cheered on by boisterous and excited spectatorship of classes and fellow competitors. Mr Thompson was once again awesome as our…

Rutherford enters eSports and proves our Excellence

The traditional idea of sport has expanded to include video games such as Overwatch, Fortnite, and Rocket League to name a few. With that change comes an increase in competitive play.  Rutherford College at the end of the year put together a Rocket League team captained by Jarvis Ahomiro, to compete in the NZESF Rocket League National Championship. Rocket League is football with teams of three remote-controlled cars with jets attached to them. A high adrenaline game where teamwork, communication, hand-eye coordination, and reading your opponent come into play. In the heats our team was a force to be reckoned…

In a few weeks, he will compete at the Nationals in Mt Maunganui, representing Muriwai Beach. Congratulations Dylan on your outstanding achievements and we wish you all the best at the Nationals.

Sports Committee Leadership Day

On Tuesday, 2 February the Sports Committee attended a leadership day at Lake Pupuke. This day entailed a range of activity-based learning where we complete challenges. This incredible opportunity was given to us to bond as a group and show each other our strengths and weaknesses within leading and the group itself. As the day went on the Sports Committee bonded and was able to learn about each other’s different leadership styles and how we will be able to come together to run events within our community and school throughout the year. One of the biggest highlights of the day…

Junior Mixed Touch Season

As the Western Zone Touch competition was set up as a one-day tournament, we decided to enter our Junior Mixed Touch team into a seasonal competition as well. Therefore, we entered into the North Harbour competition for the season. Our games were every Tuesday at Hato Petera College in Northcote. The team was scheduled for four pool games over that period and came out of the round robin undefeated with 18 tries for and only 3 against. This placed us in good stead heading into the final vs Takapuna Grammar that was played on Tuesday, 24 November. Thanks to the…

Waitakere Composite Cricket Team

Over the last few weeks, we have had a group of boys involved in a Waitakere Composite Cricket team. As we have not had sufficient numbers to enter our own Rutherford College team this season, these boys have taken the opportunity to gel with a few others from Waitakere and Liston to compete in the Junior A T20 Central / West competition. Playing under the coaching of Ben Brain’s father Philip throughout this Term 4 season, the team has performed very well, finishing with a 2 – 2 record. The wins have been emphatic, and the losses have been very…

Lucas Brings Home Gold

Year 13 student Lucas Alabastro is the New Zealand champion in Grappling following his wins against two semi-finalists at the national championships held recently in Auckland. Lucas defeated Tumukai Ikifitu on points and Sean Maguire by submission at the Barfoot and Thompson Stadium in Kohimaramara on 21 November. Grappling is a version of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Lucas won the gold medal in the White Belt Juvenile division. Lucas has been training at the Oliver MMA gym in New Lynn for 3-4 hours each day, under the guidance of his coaches Nick Thornton, Karlo Witana, Kyle Murtagh and others. Their coaching…
