Year 9 and 10 students have been enjoying Wider Living Week this week, with activities ranging from paintball to cooking. The weather necessitated a few last minute changes to some trips but thanks to our wonderfully committed staff the week has run smoothly. Thanks to Ms Lehndorf for her organisation of the week, all staff involved, and students for their participation.
Over two days, Rutherford welcomed the Year 8 students from Te Atatū Intermediate, Rangeview Intermediate and other schools who will be attending Year 9 at Rutherford in 2019. On Tuesday, 27 and Wednesday, 28 November Rutherford College held its annual Orientation experience to welcome Year 8s enrolled for the following year. Year 8 students were welcomed by Te Kōtuku Kapa Haka, Mr Moore and Miss Exeter, the Year 9 Dean for 2019. On Saturday, 1 December the ICAS medal presentation ceremony was held at Auckland University. Rutherford College was lucky enough to have two of our students in attendance; Tunde Ficza won for top in English for Year 10 and Anna Choi won for top in Mathematics for Year 13. ICAS provides an opportunity for students to compete academically with students in Australia and internationally. The highest achieving students in each country are awarded a University Medal. All students who participate receive a University Certificate indicating their level of achievement from High Distinction to Participation.
I swapped my phone and social media for 21 days with 13 strangers getting lost in the bush, rowing for hours in the hot sun, then again under the stars, running up hills and kayaking down river rapids. With my watch group Cobham 646 by my side we laughed till we cried and cried till we laughed. Outward bound Anakiwa is one of the biggest accomplishments of my life so far. On Wednesday, 14 November Year 9 and 10 girls competed in the Junior Girls AFL Cup at QBE Stadium in Albany. It was a cloudy day, but that didn’t stop the team winning three out of four games, and losing one game by a close 1 point. The first game was vs Mahurangi. Rutherford came out with a 75-0 win starting the day off well. Rutherford also won their second game vs Auckland Girls Grammar School by 21 points The third game Rutherford played was much more of a struggle. On Tuesday, 27 November our Junior Touch teams headed off to Bruce Pulman Park to compete at the Auckland Secondary Schools Touch Junior Championships. They qualified as a result of finishing in the top 2 of the Western Zone Competition. We had a cast of 24 students represent the mighty Kotuku on a cloudy, warm summer’s day. We arrived early and made quick use of the empty pitches to warm up and perfect our last minute tactics.
