This year's German Speaking Competition of the University of Auckland Goethe Society was held on Saturday, 1 August. Rutherford College had five participants in the competition who had to showcase their German language skills in a short speech and in unrehearsed interactions. Our Year 10 students Luca Boyack and Tinirau Hohepa did particularly well with Luca achieving second place and Tinirau achieving third place in their category. Year 12 students Rebecca Wilson and Aissey Escasenas managed to gain a "commended" grade and Alex Johnsons came out of the competition with a "distinction" grade. Congratulations to all participants. German Fairy Tale Evening 2019

The annual German Fairy Tale Evening was hosted by the German Teaching Group and our German language learners from Rutherford Primary School and Te Atatu Intermediate School on Friday, 1 November. The evening was a great success where the language learning of all age groups was celebrated and culture was shared. Several members of the German-speaking community turned up and guest speakers inspired others by sharing stories from their language learning experiences. The performances of the night and the German short films made by our students were a wonderful collaborative effort. Thanks to everyone involved in this project.

2019 Homestay Registration

Register now to host an international student in 2019. The International Student Programme is a valued part of life at Rutherford College, providing opportunities for our students to interact with and gain greater understanding of other cultures and different ways of living. 2019 will be no exception and we are looking forward to once again welcoming International Groups to our school to experience a slice of “Kiwi life” and of course to learn and practice English. We require lots of new homestay families who are willing to host international students on a short term basis. This could mean hosting for…

Petanque

On Friday 4th May, 6 students headed off to Herne Bay Petanque Club to compete at the 2018 Schools Petanque tournament. Team 1 consisted of Kaila Ru, Nakita Ru and Tesara Keil who finished 10th out of the 23 competing schools – an excellent result. Team 2 were no strangers to the sport – Nathan Carretier, Tom Heloire and Guillaume Bourhis all from the home of Petanque. The boys narrowly missed out on a medal finish as they took on Rangitoto in the 3rd/4th playoff. Both teams showed suburb sportsmanship throughout the day and did Rutherford extremely proud – congratulations!

Senior Softball

Well what an interesting season it was… we started the season way back in early February when the sun was at its highest and the boys all hid from the sun while they waited to bat. Last night we finished 3rd in the Auckland Competition. We competed away at Nationals in Hamilton all last week and placing 6th in a tie breaker 10th innings game vs Gisborne Boys High. We would like to acknowledge all the parental support over the season, in particular Mel Ford, Christine Love and Steve Loudon… thank you very much.
