Chess Tournament

On Tuesday, 15 June, two teams from Rutherford College competed in the inter-school chess tournament hosted in Kelston Boys High School. The A team – Oliver Gracewood, Preston Lee, Jay Huggins and Daepung Lee – placed an impressive 3rd equal overall, competing against Auckland Grammar and Auckland International College. Unfortunately, the A team lost the tiebreaker and placed 6th out of 10. The B team – Ted Rho, Sean Park, Tony Schaufelberger and Edwin Schaufelberger – placed 9th.

Overall, for the first Rutherford team to participate in a chess tournament for years, both teams performed well and brought pride to the Rutherford Kotuku, representing the school’s values, and striving for excellence in the sport. The experience was great for everyone and will stand to build a strong foundation for future Rutherford chess players in years to come.
