Kia ora te whanau o te Kotuku Throughout the journey, from a fledging kotuku through…
During the week we were lucky enough to have Nicky and her team from Drowning Prevention Auckland do sessions with our Year 9 PE classes. The focus of the sessions was to raise awareness about drowning statistics and the main causes of drowning in Auckland. She provided students with some tools to keep themselves and others safe in water based activities.
Students were guided through the correct use of life jackets, including how to fit them when already in the water. They discussed how to determine if water was safe to enter and entry and exit strategies and techniques.
Students thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and learnt a lot about their surroundings, as well as their strengths and weaknesses with regards to water safety. The PE staff also participated in an extended professional learning session which will now allow them to follow on and extend students even further.
We would like to thanks Nicky and Drowning Prevention Auckland for their time and look forward to working with them again in the future.
