Kaitiakitanga on Henderson Creek

After high winds and rain postponed the trip from Monday, we were able to take students Kayaking on the Henderson Creek on Wednesday 14th September.

The purpose of this trip was to participate in an outdoor activity under the framework of Kaitiakitanga. Students had previously learned about the local iwi’s Tikanga and Kawa and what Kaitiakitanga meant through a visit to the school Marae. They had a special guest visit by an ecological expert who linked the prior learning to the special area that the Te Atatū Peninsula is a part of.

This came together with the kayaking trip where they were able to see first hand and learn about the ecosystems Rutherford College is connected to and how we can all make choices that impact them.
