Roman Army comes to the Classroom
The Roman Army came to life for two lucky Social Studies classes last week! Mr Darren White, Classics and Social Studies teacher at Rutherford College, brought in his collection of weapons and armour for 9Gu and 9Sa to check out. An avid hobbyist and collector, Mr White gave demonstrations and in-depth explanations of how the weapons and protective gear worked.
Students then had the opportunity to wear the chainmail, helmets and other gear and hold a gladius, pugio and pilum along with a scutum (shield).
Students thoroughly enjoyed the lesson and now have an appreciation as to how heavy this gear was for Roman soldiers to wear in battle. Thank you for sharing your expertise with these classes, Mr White!
