Rutherford College Concert Band

Our awesome Concert Band usually competes in the KBB Music Festival however because of COVID the festival was cancelled this year. The organisers still wanted each school to partake in the music-making process and suggested each school submit a video recording of this year's repertoire. Luckily for us, our flute tutor Alex Alford professionally records ensemble groups and choirs as a side gig so he was able to do this for our kids. We are very fortunate to have Hanna as a band director this year, this hasn't been an easy year for anyone but her positive attitude has kept…

Board of Trustees – Student Representative Election

On Wednesday, 23 September 2020 we held our annual Board of Trustees Student Representative Election. This process follows the same one as the Triennial Parent and Staff elections however, student representatives are elected annually in September. Student trustees have equal standing, voice, accountabilities and vote as other board members, they can't be the board chair (neither can the principal nor staff trustee). Any student enrolled full-time in Year 9 and above, and under the age of 20, is eligible to stand for election and vote for a student trustee. This year, we had to get creative as candidates were unable…

BlakeVR Sessions for Social Studies

The Social Studies department were privileged to host BLAKE and their travelling roadshow this week. With a set of virtual reality headsets, the BLAKE educators, Courtney and Annika, ran a fabulous environmental education session with each year 9 class. The focus was comparing and contrasting pristine and degraded marine environments which ties in with the Term 2 topic: Change – People and the Oceans. Students “swam” at various locations around NZ, including Poor Knights Islands, Goat Island and the Hauraki Gulf. Students came away with actions they can take to protect the environment and a much deeper sense of kaitiakitanga.…

Year 9 and Chinese Classes Buddhist Temple Visit

As part of our kaupapa, philosophy to develop global open minded citizens we will be visiting a Buddhist Temple on Wednesday, 1 May. The purpose of this opportunity is to encourage students to learn more about other cultures and belief systems. We believe that our students will develop a raised awareness of different cultures that are part of our local and Auckland community. We will also highlight similarities to what we reinforce as being important within our own school context.  We will be making express links in the visit to our Rutherford College values base of Kairangi _- Excellence Manakatangi…

Pushed to the limit

I swapped my phone and social media for 21 days with 13 strangers getting lost in the bush, rowing for hours in the hot sun, then again under the stars, running up hills and kayaking down river rapids. With my watch group Cobham 646 by my side we laughed till we cried and cried till we laughed. Outward bound Anakiwa is one of the biggest accomplishments of my life so far. Many moments during the Mind Body Soul course will forever be treasured. Kayaking down the pristine waters of the Pelorus River, surrounded by nothing but purity, so pure we…

TLC

A spine tingling haka is what greeted Dr Ralph Pim and I when we entered the school hall on Monday morning. The haka was performed with such passion and pride that it was clear to see that we were in the presence of some of great junior and senior Rutherford Colleges leaders. Being an international frontrunner in leadership development Ralph said that although he had only made a handful of visits to Rutherford he has seen huge amounts of growth within the students in understanding what it takes to be a great leader. He said that the great work that…
