Waka Ama

Kazin Macgregor, Nicolas Fruean, Gianni Watene and Brodie Bennett have been working hard at their chosen sport of  Waka Ama for the Waitakere Outrigger Canoe club. Their commitment has been shown by spending all of their Christmas holidays training six days a week with training and fitness happening twice a day.

In January, the boys competed in heats, semi-finals and finals at the Waka Ama National competition at lake Karapiro.  The boys were spread across two 6-man teams where they competed in the J19 Grade. One team placed 3rd place in the 500m and 4th place in the 1000m and the other team placed 5th place in the 1000m. The two teams then combined taking out 2nd place in the 12-man hull race.

Their outstanding results placed the team 6th overall which means they will be representing New Zealand in Hawaii in August.
The boys are continuing with their vigorous training so they will be prepared to compete internationally.

The news of your achievement has come as a great delight to all of us at Rutherford. All your hard work, commitment and practice has paid off.
Wishing you all the best of luck
