Year 13 Science Geology trip
On Friday June 10th, the Year 13 Science class took a trip to Piha and Maukatia Bay (beside Muriwai). Despite the forecast, the weather was good and the students really enjoyed exploring all of the rocks and geological features at the beaches. I think the waves were a highlight, with the rough weather they put on a showcase for us crashing on all the rock forms.
The students are looking at these locations in order to identify geological features that give us evidence of the formation of the Waitakere Ranges, dated back to some 22 million years ago. They are currently writing science reports based on their field trip and research from geologists, who have already written scientific journals, based on their studies of the area using geological dating techniques to describe the geological history of the area.
