Year 13 Science trip to Muriwai and Piha

On 23 March, the Year 13 Science class took a trip to Piha and Maukatia Bay (beside Muriwai). It was a beautiful sunny day and the students really enjoyed exploring all of the rocks and geological features at the beaches. I think the caves were definitely a highlight, but a few people got wet feet playing chicken with the small waves!

The students are looking at these locations in order to identify geological features that give us evidence of the formation of the Waitakere Ranges, dated back to some 22 million years ago. They are currently writing science reports based on their field trip observations, and information they are researching from geologists, who have already written scientific journals based on large amounts of field data, and geological dating techniques.
