Rutherford Students Excel at Māori and Pasifika Maths Challenge

Rutherford Students Excel at Māori and Pasifika Maths Challenge

All four Rutherford teams performed exceptionally well

On Tuesday morning, 22 July 2025, Rutherford College proudly sent two Year 9 teams and two Year 10 teams to compete in the West Auckland Māori and Pasifika Maths Challenge, hosted at Rutherford College.

This exciting event brought together secondary schools from across the region to test their mathematical skills in a fast-paced competition, where teams had just 20 minutes to solve 15 challenging questions. All four Rutherford teams performed exceptionally well.

The Year 10 Rutherford B team claimed first place, showcasing not only their mathematical ability but also their teamwork and friendship.

Their positive interactions with the Year 9 markers from St Peter’s College—through encouraging comments and light-hearted jokes like the memorable “67” moment—highlighted the spirit of connection and collaboration that made the day even more enjoyable.

The Year 9 teams also impressed, despite each competing one member short. Their determination and skill earned them first and second place, a remarkable achievement that reflects their resilience and talent.

We are incredibly proud of all our students for their outstanding performance and exemplary behaviour throughout the event. Their enthusiasm and sportsmanship made the day enjoyable for everyone involved.

Our Year 9 teams included: Kaia Cash (9NI), Khaedon Nootai (9NI), Ben Curtis (9LK), Riley Grace (9HO), Jayden-Lee Hita (9BR), Sharlott Naicker (9BR). Our Year 10 teams included: Ruby Carter (10KM), Isha Baynosa (10HS), Miri Hatalafale (10HS), Karina Reddy (10HS), Paul Amerika (10GU), Asha Turoa (10GU), Kiara Gill (10FI).

We now look ahead to the grand final, hosted by De La Salle College, which will feature up to 30 teams from 20 schools across the Central, South, and West Auckland regions. South Auckland schools have traditionally dominated this competition, and we’re hoping to be the first team in six years to bring the title home to West Auckland. Go Rutherford!
