Sports Achievements

​The following students have achieved great results in their chosen sport.

Amy Thomson

Amy Thomson has had an exceptional year across multiple endurance sports, proving herself as one of Rutherford College’s most outstanding athletes.

She began by teaming up with Amy Cosslett in the U19 Girls’ Aquathon at the Auckland Secondary Schools Championships, where the pair secured a strong 6th place against top competition.

On the track, Amy delivered dominant performances at the Auckland Secondary Schools Athletics Championships, winning gold in both the 3000m and the U17 Steeplechase, earning selection to represent Auckland at the North Island Championships—where she once again took first place in both events.

Her success continued in cross country. Amy placed 2nd in the U17 Girls at the NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships in Whangārei and later earned another national silver, finishing 2nd in the U18 Girls at the NZSS Champs in Christchurch. She also won the Auckland Secondary Schools Road Race in the Intermediate Girls’ division.

Representing New Zealand on the international stage, Amy travelled to the Gold Coast for the Australian Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships, finishing 3rd in the U17 race and helping the NZ team secure 2nd overall, as well as 2nd in the relay.

In recognition of her remarkable year, Amy was awarded Senior Sportswoman of the Year and the prestigious Dux Ludorum.

Amy’s achievements highlight her incredible talent, dedication, and consistency across every discipline she takes on.

Tanner Costin 

Tanner had a remarkable diving season, representing New Zealand and Auckland with impressive results. 

He started by competing at the Dubai National Diving Championships in March, where he placed 4th in both the A Boys 1m and 3m events for the 16-18 age group. 

In May, he represented Auckland at the New Zealand South Island Diving Championship in Dunedin, finishing 2nd in the 16-18 Boys 1m springboard and 1st in the 3m springboard. 

Tanner then excelled at the New Zealand National Diving Championships in July, securing 2nd place in both the 1m and 3m events and 1st in the 14-18 Boys 3m synchro.

Roma Bowers-Fleming

Roma Bowers-Fleming has had an outstanding year in cricket, making her mark at regional, national, and international levels.

She was a key player in the Pasifika Girls’ team at the Rangatahi Festival, helping them achieve a historic first-ever win over the New Zealand Māori Girls, followed by another strong victory against the South Asian Girls. Roma also competed in the Auckland Cricket Association U17 Girls T20 Summer Series, where her mixed-club team finished an impressive second.

Roma’s success has also taken her to the international stage: she was selected to represent the Cook Islands International Women’s Cricket Team at the ICC Women’s T20 East Asia-Pacific Qualifier in Fiji — a major event featuring eight nations competing for one spot at the Global Qualifier in England.

Roma continues to establish herself as a rising talent in the cricket community and an inspiration for young female athletes.

Leona Jiachen Fan

Earlier this year, Leona Jiachen Fan reached an extraordinary milestone, earning the honour of representing New Zealand at the prestigious WOGA Gymnastics Classic in Frisco, Texas — one of the world’s largest gymnastics events, with nearly 3,000 athletes competing.

Leona took to the floor in the Level 9 Junior B division and delivered a series of brilliant routines. Her strong performances helped the New Zealand Level 9 Rhythmic team claim an impressive 3rd place overall. Individually, she shone with a 5th place finish on Floor and 7th on Uneven Bars, standing out in a field packed with international talent.

We are extremely proud of Leona’s achievements and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next!

Myra Tan 

She has had a successful year in rhythmic gymnastics, with strong performances in several competitions. At the Counties Manukau Rhythmic Invitational, she placed 2nd overall with top finishes in multiple apparatus. She followed this up with another impressive showing at the Canterbury Champs, finishing 2nd overall and winning 1st place in Clubs. At the 2024 New Zealand Secondary School Rhythmic Competition, she earned 5th overall with standout results in Ball and Hoop. She also took 1st place at the CSA Gymsports Championships in the Level 8 category.

Lucy Day

Competing at Level 10, the highest in the sport, Lucy has impressed across all events, placing 5th in hoops, 9th in clubs, 11th in ribbon, and 16th in ball, earning an overall 11th place finish. Her results showcase not only exceptional skill but also versatility and determination in a highly competitive field.

Connor Steel

Connor Steel has had an exceptional year in wrestling, achieving top results at regional, national, and international levels.

He dominated early in the season, winning gold at the Auckland Secondary Schools Wrestling Championships and following it with outstanding silver-medal performances at both the Bay of Plenty Championships and the North Island Championships in the U17 92kg division.

Connor also impressed at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Wrestling Tournament, battling his way to the finals to secure an excellent 2nd place finish. His strong form contributed to Rutherford College’s most successful wrestling season in years.

Connor’s success earned him selection to the New Zealand Development Squad, and he went on to represent his country at the 2025 Australian National Championships, where he won a bronze medal in the U17 92kg category — an outstanding international result.

Congratulations to Connor on an incredible season of achievements, both for Rutherford College and New Zealand.

Thomas Hollier, Jett Felix- Croft, and Jakob Hollier

Thomas Hollier, Jett Felix-Croft, and Jakob Hollier have been turning heads on the flag football field, representing the Metro Lions Flag Football Club in major tournaments including the Auckland Championships and the National Championships.

Their standout performances at Nationals earned them invitations to trial for the New Zealand representative squads — and they absolutely delivered. Thomas has been selected for the New Zealand Under-17 team as a wide receiver/defensive back, while Jett (quarterback) and Jakob (wide receiver/defensive back) have both secured spots in the Under-15 team.

Now, these three talented athletes are gearing up for the adventure of a lifetime: travelling to the USA to compete at the Junior World Championships, where they’ll take on the best young players from around the globe.

Mya Anderson

Mya Anderson has had an outstanding year in tenpin bowling, adding multiple major titles and national honours to her name.

She won the U18 Girls Waitakere Junior Youth Cup and has consistently excelled on the international stage, representing New Zealand for three consecutive seasons. Her achievements include gold and silver at the Australian National Championships, along with two historic bronze medals at the President’s Shield — the first ever for a New Zealand girls’ team.

At the New Zealand Youth Nationals, Mya delivered another strong performance, earning medals in Doubles, Singles, the U18 Masters, and a Squad Event. She followed this with an exceptional showing in the U21 Youth Teams Event, where she earned an All-Star Award for the second year in a row — the only U18 girl to receive it.

Mya’s remarkable results have now secured her selection for both the New Zealand U18 and U21 Teams for 2026 — an incredible achievement.

Mikael Garner

An outstanding year in baseball for Mikael, earning selection for the 16U Pac Men team after strong performances at the Mid-Summer Blast National Tournament and with the Central Mako squad, who won the 16U New Zealand Nationals.

Mikael went on to play a key role at the 2025 Aussie Classic on the Gold Coast, where the Pac Men claimed the U17 championship title. After a narrow 4–3 semi-final win, the team produced a remarkable comeback in the final—overturning a 6–0 deficit against the Sea Dogs to secure an 8–6 victory.

Cameron Deo

Cameron Deo has made an impressive start to his tournament season, earning multiple podium finishes across both kata and kumite.

He collected bronze and silver medals in the West and South Auckland round-robin kata events, followed by another bronze in the West Auckland kumite. After a strong fourth-place finish in the South Auckland kumite, Cameron stepped up to the junior black belt open division at the Auckland Secondary Schools Tournament, where he won silver in kata and bronze in kumite.

His consistent success has earned him qualification for the New Zealand Nationals. Congratulations, Cameron!

Mitch Vye

Mitch Vye has enjoyed an exceptional first year in karting, competing in the 125cc Rotax Heavy class. He has collected multiple podium finishes, including third in the Hamilton Point Series, second at the Auckland Christmas Meeting, and third in the Auckland End-of-Year Club Championships, along with winning the Auckland Club Points title.

Over the season, Mitch has achieved three best lap times, four wins in Hamilton, and an impressive 18 podiums in Auckland, placing in the top five 42 times. He began the new season with a first-place finish and continues to pursue his dream of becoming a supercar driver.

Most recently, he recorded the fastest lap for his team at the Bathurst event at the Taupo Motorsport Track. With such a strong start, Mitch’s future in motorsport looks very promising.
