VAIASO O LE GAGANA SAMOA 2026
VAIASO O LE GAGANA SAMOA 2026
The theme for Samoan Language Week 2026 is “E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nu’u” which translates to “From the high mountains are the blessings of the villages".It reminds us that the strength and success of our community come from the foundations laid by those who have come before us. For our tupulaga (youth), this means valuing our language, culture, and identity, while learning from the wisdom of our families, elders, and community leaders. When our young people are connected to their heritage, they are better equipped to succeed and contribute positively to their communities.
The Komiti Pasefika organised a week of activities, displays, assembly presentations and an important cultural practice.
Wednesday (ASO LULU) 3rd June: Wednesday lunchtime the game “Lape” was played. Lape is a traditional Samoan game which consists of softball rules, but instead of a bat you use your hands. Komiti VS teachers caused the gym to be filled with laughs, cheers and shouting! Keleni won player of the day after showing her determination to make it to the end.
Thursday (ASO TOFI) 4th June: Throughout the breaks at school, traditional and modern Samoan music was played outside the music room, bringing energy to the school and giving students the opportunity to experience and appreciate Samoan Culture.
Friday (ASO FARAILE) 5th June: A traditional Samoan ‘Ava Ceremony was performed by students from the Komiti Pasefika during staff briefing. It was a shortened ceremony to conclude our week of celebrations. It was an opportunity to recognise our principal Mr Moore and welcome our recently appointed Deputy Principals Ms Carr and Mr McGibbon as well as our newly named deans to their roles in our school. Once our ceremony was over, the Samoan flag was then raised to the singing of the Samoan National Anthem.
Our Samoan group entertained students and staff on Friday during lunch with a vibrant cultural performance. Through traditional dance, they shared stories, expressed cultural pride, and brought the spirit of Samoa to life. Their performance was met with enthusiastic applause. The mat was open for guests from the audience to dance to the music playing and gaining points for their houses.
Fa'afetai tele lava to everyone who participated in our Samoan Language Week celebrations. Through language, culture, and shared experiences, we continue to strengthen our sense of belonging and appreciation for the rich diversity that makes our school community so special.
