WAIPAPA ŌHANGA RAU 2025 - The University of Auckland

WAIPAPA ŌHANGA RAU 2025 - The University of Auckland

Connecting with other Māori tauira and gaining valuable insight.

Seven of our Year 13 students had the incredible opportunity to experience life at the University of Auckland (Waipapa Taumata Rau), connecting with other Māori tauira and gaining valuable insight into what their future could look like in higher education.

Samara Reede, Katana Renata, Noah Godfrey, Te-Rore Wellington- Waerehu, Tiara Dixon, Cody Wihongi and Daemon Kennedy were welcomed at a pōhiri at Waipapa Marae. Our students were then guided through a presentation which covered essential information on university entrance requirements, enrolment pathways, and how to navigate the transition from secondary school to tertiary education. Then it was off for a walk to one of the four halls of residence, Grafton Hall; to get a glimpse into the accommodation options available. Students then participated in interactive activities designed to teach valuable life skills. Our students got to hear firsthand from current Māori students at the University of Auckland who shared their experiences, challenges, and successes, offering a realistic and inspiring perspective on university life.

“This experience not only broadened our perspectives but also reinforced the importance of whanaungatanga, time management, and planning for our academic journeys. The connections we made with other tauira, as well as the knowledge we gained, made this experience truly invaluable. It also left us feeling more confident and motivated to take the next steps toward our future at Waipapa Taumata Rau, or any university.”
