On Thursday 5th June, our school’s talented brass ensemble, Kotuku Brass, proudly represented us at the NZCT Chamber Music Contest, held at the Raye Freedman Arts Centre. This prestigious national competition showcases some of the finest young chamber musicians across Aotearoa, and our students rose to the occasion with confidence, style, and musical excellence. The ensemble includes Ben McIntyre, Daniel Fa’avae, Fabian Fabricius, Elan van Dolleweerd, Jerry Zhou and Harry Donald.
The newly formed group is led by our very own trumpet itinerant tutor Sang Hyun Kim, an accomplished trumpet player himself and former head boy of our school, Kotuku Brass delivered a powerful and polished performance. Mr Kim’s leadership, both musical and personal, has been an inspiration to the group, guiding them through rehearsals and encouraging them to aim high as an ensemble.
The group presented a dynamic and technically challenging programme, impressing both the audience and judges with their ensemble playing, balance, and tone. Their commitment to the art of chamber music and their shared passion for brass created a performance that was both engaging and memorable. Their programme included “What a wonderful world” GD Weiss & B Thiele, Jazz Fugue by JS Bach and Brass Quintet No. 7, Opus 5, Mvt. 3 by V Eawld.
Competing at the NZCT Chamber Music Contest is a significant achievement in itself, with high expectations and a competitive atmosphere. Kotuku Brass stood proudly among many top-level student groups from around Tamaki Maukaurau, and their performance was a testament to the dedication, discipline, and teamwork they have developed in only a short amount of time.
Participating in the contest also gave students valuable experience performing in a professional setting, and the chance to receive feedback from respected adjudicators in the music world.
We are incredibly proud of Kotuku Brass and thankful to Mr Kim for his mentorship and musicianship. The group represented our school with pride, showing that with hard work and passion, excellence in the arts is well within reach.
