Alexandra has been awarded Third Place for her artwork Maea at the National Secondary School Art Awards 2026

On Thursday 10 September, Alexandra received the award for 3rd Place from guest judge, renowned artist and educator Judy Darragh. This year saw a record 750 entries from more than 140 secondary schools across New Zealand, making selection for the exhibition a significant achievement in itself. Being awarded Third Place among such a highly competitive field is an exceptional accomplishment.

"My artwork explores my sense of Tūrangawaewae, drawing on my connection to both of my marae in Te Waipounamu (the South Island): Puketeraki and Ōraka. Throughout this year, the exploration of my whakapapa and heritage has been central to my artistic practice and has informed the development of my work.

This painting is inspired by the renowned artist Robyn Kahukiwa. The background features a koru pattern, symbolising growth, new beginnings, and strength. These themes are woven throughout my artboard, reflecting my ongoing journey of understanding identity, ancestry, and belonging."
