Year 12 Travel and Tourism - A Busy Week

Besides the educational benefits of any school field trip, last Friday gave Year 12 Travel and Tourism students an insight into employment opportunities viable beyond the school gate, and a few unique experiences along the way.

The New Zealand School of Travel and Tourism (NZST) spelt out possibilities for Level 3 to 6 qualifications, internships and work experience overseas, such as Disney World. Aja, the CEO and Ana captured our minds with day-to-day class activities, workplace expectations and information when attending NZST, by the way, just to let you know that our uniform checks, don't be late at our school gate and meeting assessment deadlines at Rutherford College are for real, everywhere we visited these rules really were Rules, too !!!!!

A brisk walk-through Aotea Centre, past the Sky Tower and Conference Centre led us to the Viaduct, where, in no time, we found ourselves in the Celebrity Suite, the place for many a VIP, the Rich and Famous and Royalty to stopover, that being, the plush International Hotel Icon, Sofitel. Hosts Anya and Rebecca gave their successful work stories which made sense and gave us scope to think about making any career-related dream into a reality!!!

Then, mid- week we had a seminar from Karen Wright, CEO; Queenstown Resort College offering 10 scholarships at the end of the year and internships which can take you to work anywhere in the world; all paid for and lasting up to 9 months away from home. On return you have an automatic interview with Air New Zealand.

And so, both the field trip and seminar made us think about the Travel and Tourism Industry, our beautiful country with its mountains, lakes, rivers and its people, the possibility to contribute to New Zealand’s second largest export earner and GDP runner, making class time more relevant than ever.

Thank you to all staff who helped along the way.
