Sports Performance Academy (SPA)

Rutherford College's newly introduced Sports Performance Academy (SPA) has made an outstanding start in 2026

Rutherford College's newly introduced Sports Performance Academy (SPA) has made an outstanding start in 2026, providing Year 9 and 10 students with a unique opportunity to combine their passion for sport with meaningful learning and personal development.

The academy is offered as a half-year subject option with 130 students currently enrolled across five focus sports: Basketball, Netball, Football, Rugby, and Volleyball.

Students have been participating in weekly sport-specific morning training sessions alongside strength and conditioning training designed to enhance athletic performance, movement quality, and overall wellbeing. The academy extends far beyond practical sport, exposing students to a wide range of sport science and performance-related learning.

Areas of study have included nutrition, goal setting, tactical understanding of sport, fitness testing, sports psychology, visualisation techniques, and careers within the sporting industry. Students are encouraged to apply these concepts to their own sporting journeys while developing valuable lifelong skills that support success both on and off the field.

A key focus of the programme has been creating leadership and further wider sporting involvement opportunities. All students will soon have completed either an Introduction to Officiating or a Level 1 Refereeing/Umpiring qualification in their chosen sport and have put these skills into practice by officiating at local primary and intermediate school cluster tournaments.

The academy has also provided students with valuable real-world learning experiences. Earlier this year, students visited AUT Millennium, where they worked alongside the Athlete Development team to undertake fitness testing and explore recovery strategies used by high-performance athletes (Check out the video here - https://www.instagram.com/p/DWNdA8QkxVI/?igsh=ZTRteTluZzdiaXdz). Students have also had the opportunity to learn from industry professionals, including sessions focused on "The Sporting Mind," which explored the mental skills required for success in sport and life.

The Sports Performance Academy has quickly become an engaging learning environment where students are challenged to develop as athletes, leaders, and learners. We look forward to continuing to grow the programme and providing even more opportunities for our students to connect classroom learning with real-world sporting experiences.

We thank everyone involved for helping make the Sports Performance Academy a valuable addition to the Rutherford College curriculum.
